SMRT Will Roll out its First Fleet of Electric Taxis in August 2021

SMRT is the third largest cab fleet operator in Singapore. It owns around 1,780 vehicles.

SMRT is officially going green

The first batch of electric taxis will arrive in August 2021. And it appears that SMRT is planning to change its entire taxi fleet into electric taxis within 5 years. The type of electric taxis that the company will operate in Singapore includes sedans, station wagons and multi-purpose vehicles. In line with Singapore's Green Plan, the company is all set to go all environmental-friendly. SMRT is the first transport operator in Singapore that is deploying electric taxis on a large scale. Besides taxis, SMRT will also introduce other mobility services using electric vehicles such as vans, limousines and buses.

Last year, SMRT's fleet became 100 percent hybrid after introducing 600 Toyota Prius Hybrid Cars. Recently, SMRT signed a memorandum of understanding with electric motorcycle-maker Euro Sports Technologies for distributing commercial electric motorcycles in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific. Apparently, the electric motorcycles will be used for food delivery and logistics applications. The company also introduced electric minibuses that are equipped with a wheelchair-lifting mechanism to reduce carbon footprint.

SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, said: “In support of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, we aim to have cleaner and greener vehicles for a more environmentally sustainable land transport sector, SMRT Taxis will move from our current 100% cleaner, hybrid standard taxi fleet to exploring suitable Electric Vehicle (EV) models.”

SMRT CEO, Neo Kian Hong, said, “Our taxi fleet became fully hybrid last year, and we have plans to convert our entire taxi fleet to electric vehicles in five years, commencing with the recent purchase of 300 MG 5 electric cars. We saw an opportunity beyond just electric vehicles and partnered with SP Group to push for an ecosystem of connected electric services.”

Conclusion

Singapore is green and it’ll be greener soon. The introduction of electric taxis in Singapore is an effort by SMRT to bring sustainable urban mobility services to the public. Being sustainable is an integral part of how SMRT operates its business. Moving towards a fully electric taxi fleet shows the company’s commitment to the government’s Green Plan.
